I was always interested in attending one the Mobile Monday meets but never managed to. One of the reasons was that the meets till now were hosted far from workplace. But, yesterday's meet was at Yahoo and I was just not going to miss it this time. I did make it albeit a bit late.
I caught the last few minutes of multimodal application presentation by Igor Jablokov (Program Director, Multimodal & Voice Portals, IBM Software Group). It was about blending speech input output with traditional web and mobile applications using VoiceXML. I guess this stuff is in the future whether you like it or not. I am still not comfortable being greeted by the IVR person on T-mobile or SprintPCS customer service. Yet, it has some real potential uses, especially for mobile services relying on lot of textual content. Instead of thumbing through the content on the cell phone, you might appreciate someone speaking it to you.
Next up was Fabrizio Capobianco (CEO and founder of Funambol). Funambol is the company behind the opensource product Sync4j. He gave a good overview of Sync4j. He also managed to liven up the crowd by taking potshots at the big companies.
Few Important points from his presentation:
Syncing is essential especially with so many devices we carry nowadays.
SyncML is probably the only standard in synching.
Sync4j makes it possible to implement syncing for any content using SyncML.
Syn4j architecture consists of 3 main components: Server, connectors, clients. Sync4j provides APIs to write connectors to talk toSync4j server. Clients are basically devices that understand SyncML. There are plenty of them already out there in the advanced cell phonesor you could write one for your device to application. Or you could pay Funambol to develop a connector or client for your application.
Fabrizio also gave a preview of sync4j portal - an upcoming website where you will be able to sync up your contacts or calendar.
Jeff Clavier and Marc Brown from Buzznet gave a cool presentation of Buzznet.com. They introduced it as the othr photosharing site. :-) It looks like a really neat photo sharing website.
They have free and paid subscription.
They have pretty much all the feature flickr offers as well.
They have a good community.
They have tagging capabilities (called buzzwords).
They have APIs for developers.
Jeff talked about the Buzznet platform. This is their revenue generation model. Buzznet provides custom photos portals and community. This could be for an event such as Music group tour (For e.g. SXSW). There was also an interesting example of a local newspaper providing buzznet blog for their readers to post photos of places in the county or events happening. Interesting.
Marc showed off their new Series 60 phone photo blog application to upload photos annotated with buzzwords. The idea is to provide better user experience than the standard way of emailing photos from phone. The application way also helps in gathering better metadata about the photos.
Finally, there was a presentation from Thad White, a senior director from Yahoo's product management. He showed off Yahoo's mobile products such as mobile My.Yahoo, yahoo messenger, "Send to Phone" feature in Yahoo maps and Yahoo local. I was surprised to see so many mobile services already offered by Yahoo. Pretty Cool. I have to try these out. Thad said customers who have tried it love it and they are seeing some good traffic from people using the mobile services.
There is also interest in making other Yahoo services mobile enabled as well. I am wishing for a "Send to phone" option in Yahoo address book and Yahoo notepad (SMS a note you need on the way).
And imagine, having the Send to Phone message delivered to speech enabled using VoiceXML and sync-enabled using SyncML. :-) So many possibilities ...
The meet was a good learning and stimulating experience for me. Thanks to all people behind this. Thanks to Yahoo for the snacks and space. I am in for the next one as well.

That Taco Bell Brouhaha by William Art Carden:
Wages are not foisted upon workers; they agree to pick tomatoes for "sub-poverty wages" for a reason. In a market economy, they do so because the 'sub-poverty wages" paid by Taco Bell suppliers are a better deal than anyone else is offering. It's the same reason people line up for "sweatshop" jobs in developing countries. Far from contributing to "continued misery," Taco Bell is making workers' lives a little bit better by offering something better than their next-best option.
