"S" Mintmarked Quarters Are Coming

According to a story posted at KTVU in Oakland, California, the San Francisco Mint is making a special series of America The Beautiful Quarters for circulation. The quarters will bear the "S" mintmark to signify that they were made in San Francisco. I will keep you posted as more information becomes available so you can order your coins.

Are you excited about this special issue? Do you think this is a good idea? Just another marketing ploy by the mint? I would like to know. Please post your comments below.

Learn How To Grade Washington Silver Quarters

Recently I added coin values for silver Washington quarters (1932-1964) and clad Washington quarters (1965-1998). If you use any other price guides such as the Red Book or the Blue Book, you will have to know more about grading than just what a circulated coin looks like versus an uncirculated coin. My grading guide on how to grade silver Washington quarters will teach you how to grade these coins like an expert.

1873-CC No Arrows Dime Goes to Auction

According to a press release from Stack's Bowers Galleries, they announced that they will auction the Battle Born Collection, which is only the second complete 111-piece set of Carson City coinage ever assembled. The highlight of the auction will be the Unique 1873-CC Liberty Seated No Arrows Dime, graded MS-65 by PCGS and bearing the Eliasberg pedigree. It is unique and makes it highly coveted among collectors of Carson City Mint coinage. Without it, those seeking to complete their own set will fall short. This much sought-after dime was last purchased in 2004 for $891,250 from a Bowers and Merena auction by Rusty Goe, chief architect of the Battle Born Collection, thus completing the set. The collection gets its name from the owner's home state of Nevada, "the Battle Born State." The coin will be auctioned at the ANA's World's Fair of Money in August 2012.

Kennedy Half Dollar Values

Although Kennedy half dollar values have not changed much over the last several years, there are a few that are worth significantly more than face value. My latest value guide will help you determine which coins are worth significantly more. There is one young man in our local coin collecting club who regularly goes to the bank to search through rolls of Kennedy half dollars. The last time I saw him he had approximately twenty coins that he was going to sell to a local dealer for about five dollars per coin. This was an instant profit of 1000% over his initial $.50 per coin investment.

PNG Adopts Coin Doctoring Definition

Members of the Professional Numismatists Guild (PNG) attending the organization's general membership meeting on April 17, 2012 overwhelmingly approved a three-point definition of so-called "coin doctoring."

According to the PNG press release, "This is a complex issue, but we needed to have a concise definition to help combat the deliberative and unacceptable alteration of coins in an effort to deceive. More than 50 PNG member-dealers attended the meeting, and only one voted against the definition," said PNG President Jeffrey Bernberg. "We've been working on this for over two years with Numismatic Guaranty Corporation and Professional Coin Grading Service as well as a committee of dealers and collectors to formulate an industry-acceptable definition," said PNG Executive Director Robert Brueggeman.
