Our View: Shopping is good for you, and so is giving
Down in the dumps? Feeling low? Send those holiday blues packing and shop till you drop. ``Retail therapy,'' we learned this week, actually triggers the release of dopamine in your brain, boosting your mood and making you feel good, for a little while at least.

Our View: Giving tree' had educational purpose
Oh, c'mon. Have we become so politically, religious-ly, perfectly homogenized-ly correct that we can't have a ``giving tree'' in a public school during the Christmas (and Hanukkah) season?

Our View: Heed warning on security from 9/11 panel
With Christmas lights twinkling in the night, carolers in the malls and chestnuts roasting on an open fire, our homeland seems secure this cherished season, even as our hearts yearn for the safe return of our troops who are defending freedom in Iraq.

From Charlie Brown's withered tree to no Christmas tree a...
How has America changed in 40 years? In 1965, CBS aired the animated special ``A Charlie Brown Christmas,'' an instant hit that endures to this day (it won its time slot again last week). It was all about Charlie Brown's determination not to let commercialism overwhelm the real meaning of the season. At one point, poor Charlie is ridiculed by classmates for buying a tiny withered Christmas tree instead of a large fake one.

Dave Reichert: the lawman as congressman
Some people out there think Dave Reichert should be panicking. He is a freshman Republican in a district that tilts toward the Democrats. His name appears on lists of ``the top 10 most vulnerable members of Congress.'' His president, never a favorite in the 8th Congressional district, is polling lower than ever before, emboldening Democrats to raise money and step up the pressure to take the House. Their number one target in this state: Dave Reichert.

Why what happened in the election happened
The dust has settled early. While there are still some votes to count in the 2005 elections, there is no suspense about how the major contests turned out. So why did doctors, who are trusted by almost everyone, lose? Why did people choose to keep an unpopular gas tax? Why did an embattled county executive keep his job? Here are some thoughts.....Initiative 330, medical malpractice reform. It lost by more than eight percentage points. So why did people vote against their doctors? First, it's always easier to defeat an initiative than pass one because you don't need to convince people it's wrong - all you have to do is raise a doubt or two.
