Free Dinosaur Cross Stitch Patterns
I remember watching the TV show Land of the Lost. I even liked Will Ferrell's remake of Land of the Lost. The fun of the original show was that it was cheesy and silly. My friends and I watched it faithfully.

Dinosaurs rule in the lost land and they also rule here at About.com Cross Stitch. There are three of them stalking through the free pattern collection. Stitch the free Dinosaur patterns using the colors I suggest or choose your own. No one really knows what color they were, so have some fun with it. Use metallic flosses, glow-in-the-dark filaments or flosses - whatever you like!

How to Stitch Whipped Back Stitch
To create the back stitch variation Whipped Back Stitch, first you stitch a back stitch line - then you whip it. (For some reason, every time I think of this stitch, I start humming a Devo song.)

Whipped Back Stitch looks similar to cording. I chose two contrasting colors, but coordinating colors or the same color will produce a subtle raised stitch. In the stitch tutorial, you will also find information about free back stitch practice patterns.

Friendship Saying
Friends are one of the things that make life sweet. I have been blessed with more than my share. I especially love keeping up with all my online friends! Design © Connie G. Barwick

I always think of my friends as the family I choose - Don't get me wrong, I love my family, but it is sort of small compared to some. So, I adopt people along the way. The free Friendship Saying goes out to all my buddies. Everyone needs friends to act as a "sheltering tree" when the storms come.

I stitched the model on white Aida fabric with flosses from Finca and Rainbow Gallery. I like the combination of cotton and silk flosses of different weights.

Bookmark or Borders - You Decide
I have written before that reading is one of my favorite activities. And, of course, so is Cross Stitch! So combining stitching and reading means making bookmarks. Design © Connie G. Barwick You might want to make up some bookmarks for the Needle and ThREAD: Stitching for Literacy project. Feel free to use any of my free Bookmark patterns.

The charts will also make great borders if you aren't into bookmarks. This design says "Read", but you could omit that if you liked. Add the borders to a saying or repeat them for pillowcase bands. They'd also look nice on towels done in colors to match your kitchen or bathroom decor.

If you use one of the free patterns from About.com Cross Stitch, be sure to share a photo of your project.

Each tile is presented in single, two, and three color versions. An alternate idea is to stitch one of the colors with regular cross stitch and the other colors with a Cross Stitch Variations.

Photo of the Week: Medieval Cross Pattern
Raingal72 shares a project she created using the Free Medieval Cross pattern of which a detail is shown here. She writes, in part, "I was initially captivated by the Medieval cross pattern, and wanted to use it as part of a larger project. I resized the cross a little bit, and made every third stitch as colored "jewels" in all four arms of the cross." See the whole project and learn more about her project. Photo ©

Pink Carnation and Saying Cross Stitch Design
Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr. (1809 - 1894) was an American poet who was regarded by his peers as one of the best writers of the 19th century. The quote used in this design is attributed to him. The simple floral design uses a limited color palette that may be adapted to fit your decor. In addition to the saying design, a trio of the floral motifs is included in the pattern set for your stitching pleasure. Stitch the Oliver Wendell Holmes saying design for a gift or to add as a decorative element to your home.

Free Mirrored Roses Cross Stitch Design
Roses are popular flowers and this one may be stitched in any shade you like. It's perfect for celebrating Mother's Day today! I chose a rosy shade of pink, but you might prefer yellow or pink. My mom has a wide variety of roses in her yard and I am always amazed at the variety of colors her plants exhibit. And the names! The names are as lovely as the flowers. My favorite are the Knock-Out Roses - mainly because they really are so beautiful that they will knock you out! And, because they make me think of boxing.

Design © Connie G. Barwick
Stitch the roses individually or together as shown here. You could also add more space between the roses and chart a quote about roses in between. Use the chart as you like to create your own special design.
