I am Writing Tech Ronin posts at my new WordPress blog
Even though, I'm still a Tech Ronin and writing about it, I've migrated over to a new domain: janet.tokerud.com. The blog name is now Independent Knowledge Professional. That sounds a little more formal and maybe it is. But, it's still about the fact that a great many of us are knowledge professionals and it may behoove us all to think of ourselves as independent. As you know if you've read much of tech ronin, the traditional idea of a permanent job has become obsolete. You may have a so-called permanent job, but most of us don't. As usual, I'm emphasizing...

Blogged iPad 3G Day 1 Experiences Over on tokerud.com
I rewound to my first day with my new 3G iPad. If you are interested in iPad, you might want to take a look. Included some of my favorite iPad apps.

Ordered the iPad 32 + 3G -- Here's Why
I just ordered the 32gb + 3G. I wanted to get wi-fi only and save $129 but remembered all the times I've been frustrated being stuck without an internet connection on my laptop or iPod touch. I do have an iPhone 3GS and plan on keeping it but I figured it will likely be a certain amount of hassle to substitute iPhone 3G access for access on the iPad when that's what I want to use. Was on the fence due to the expense but finally went for it since none of us really know what kinds of use cases...

Which is best for you? WordPress, TypePad, Facebook, Link...
I now have 2 WordPress.org blogs and 4 TypePad blogs plus, of course, Facebook, Linkedin and Twitter accounts. Here's the scoop. If you are a professional, consultant or independent contractor, you desperately need a web presence. If you love technology and can write your way out of a paper bag, you should almost certainly have a blog-based website as your main web presence - your home base. A blog is the not so new thing that comes after static websites. Blogs live, allow interaction and give you an easy way to make occasional updates. They have much better google juice...

Dipping a Toe into WordPress, Part 5
Guess who transferred her tokerud.com domain from Forest.net to Dreamhost? Guess who is now rocking the Thesis WordPress theme and that theme is running my tokerud.com site as a WordPress blog? Yeah. That would be me. My tokerud.com site has about 6 *static* web pages so it was not a huge challenge to migrate those pages. But then I was going from a static homegrown website to WordPress blog. I knew nothing about WordPress prior. In Part 4 of this series, I told you how Word Press for Dummies was the ticket for me to jump back into this project...

Dipping a Toe into WordPress, Part 4
Yay! I'm finally back on my WordPress project. I must admit that after spending a fairly lengthy time choosing a web host: Dreamhost and then installing WordPress, I got stuck on choosing a theme. It seemed too hard to do on my own. [Link: Part 1] This last week I found out that WordPress for Dummies, 2nd edition by Lisa Sabin-WIlson was released in late February this year. I had the misinformation that it was delayed beyond February. But no. Now I know what I've been missing. I immediately ordered the book on Amazon. I considered the possibility of a...

Kindle 2 Rocks, Part 1
Deciding to Buy the Kindle 2. After much hemming and hawing about buying a Kindle (see below), I took the plunge Saturday Feb 28 and received my Kindle the following Monday afternoon. After all the months of waiting many Kindle buyers have experienced, I was thrilled with how quickly I could take delivery. The kindle is a small tablet computer dedicated to a single task - long-form reading. It's primary focus is to make it possible for you to read ebooks with as much pleasure as you do reading conventional books. It seems clear that most people who buy Kindles...

2nd Gen MacBook Air SSD, the new laptop
I'm sitting on my couch surfing the web with my MacBook Air. I've been thoroughly delighted with this machine since day 1. It is so light and comfy and, yes, it is a gorgeous piece of tech. Just a reminder, I do have an iMac 24 sitting in my home office. And, I use it now and then. But when I do, I find being chained to a desk, constraining and uncomfortable after a while. I would much rather sit or lie or lounge in one way or another on my couch, while I work or use my computer recreationally....

Dipping a Toe into WordPress, Part 3
No further progress in actually building out my new WordPress blog. First I was stuck trying to pick a web host and that's really not settled yet but, for now I'm on Dreamhost. But now I have 2 new key questions: (1) What wp theme shall I use as the foundation of my blog? and (2) Shall I use Google Apps with email for my email hosting piece? [Links: Part 1 and Part 2] I want to focus for a minute on themes. The main point is that choosing a theme isn't just about looks, it is also about what...

Dipping a Toe into WordPress, Part 2
I got my first WordPress blog installed last night. That means I have a site up and running - nothing more. I don't want to start a brand new blog. I want to replace my static tokerud.com website with a WordPress blog. In order to find out about WordPress and it's strengths and weaknesses, I needed to try something. I could have started a blog on *something* but I don't want to start something I'm not going to keep using. Starting a new blog is the easiest thing. Converting a blog like this to WordPress is probably the hardest thing...
