When many of us think about corrupt leaders, we often think in terms of monetary payoffs. In my more than three decades of working closely with, consulting to, and advising over a thousand leaders, I have come to the conclusion that while the vast majority of individuals holding leadership positions, it is quite rare for the payoff to involve either money or anything else financial. Sometimes, these payoffs include: ego gratification; power hunger satisfaction; simply being agreed with (also known as yessed to death); or the desire for gratification.
There are few things more destructive to morale in a workplace as when there is a staff member causing havoc and no-one is willing to have that difficult conversation with them which would quickly fix things. Perhaps they are not performing well in their role or they are causing all kinds of relationship issues with inappropriate comments or behaviour, or (add your experience here.....) For me, these are defining leadership moments!
My over thirty years of closely with, advising, and training leaders, has made me recognize many aspects of effective leadership. There are many tangibles and intangibles that are needed for one to become a really great and effective leader. I have devoted many hours of seminars and articles to the skills needed by a leader, as well as the traits and attributes that are necessary.
In this country, we are fortunate to live in a democracy, where many rights are protected that might not be elsewhere. One of these is that each person has the right, unfortunately, to be ignorant, as long as that ignorance does not directly harm someone else because of actions taken. As annoying as some of us might find ignorant people to sometimes be, under ordinary circumstances, they only do harm to themselves.
An organization that wants to go far needs to have a strong vision of where it will be in the future. Your great task as a leader is to make your people trust you and believe in your vision.
